Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has expressed concern over the rising poverty levels in Nigeria despite the existence of numerous social intervention programmes.<\/p>\n

He stressed the urgent need to ensure these initiatives reach the vulnerable in society.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Kaduna on Saturday when the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Nentawe Yilwatda, paid him a courtesy visit, Governor Sani lamented that most poverty alleviation programmes have failed to achieve their intended impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the various interventions aimed at reducing poverty, the reality is that the poverty index in Nigeria continues to rise. This is an indication that many of these programmes are not reaching their intended beneficiaries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He called on the federal government to verify the authenticity of social registers, arguing that the current approach may not be targeting those most in need.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe national poverty index as highlighted by the National Bureau of Statistics is scary. We need to critically examine how these interventions are being implemented to ensure they actually benefit the vulnerable,\u201d Sani stated.<\/p>\n

He attributed part of the problem to financial exclusion, noting that many people in dire need of support remain outside the formal banking system, making it difficult for them to access government interventions.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost intervention programmes designed to support the poor do not get to them because they are financially excluded. That is why the first executive order I signed as governor was on financial inclusion,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

According to him, the Kaduna State Government has made progress in addressing this issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we speak, over 2.2 million residents have opened bank accounts in this state. Our target is to ensure that everyone, especially the vulnerable, has access to financial services so they can benefit from government interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Governor Sani reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu\u2019s administration\u2019s commitment to job creation and poverty reduction, citing ongoing efforts to establish vocational and skills acquisition centres across the state.<\/p>\n

Minister Yilwatda, in his response, commended Governor Sani for aligning his policies with President Tinubu\u2019s economic agenda and for promoting inclusive governance in Kaduna State.<\/p>\n
