Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno South, has reacted to the Canadian visa denial of Christopher Musa, Nigeria\u2019s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).<\/p>\n

Last week, Musa revealed that the Canadian High Commission denied visas to him and other top military officers, preventing them from attending an event honoring war veterans. Speaking at an event in Abuja, the CDS stated that he was supposed to be in Canada last Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Musa described the incident as a stark reminder that Nigeria must learn to be self-reliant and should not be taken for granted.<\/p>\n

At the same event, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu expressed his displeasure over the situation, going as far as telling Canada to \u201cgo to hell.\u201d The visa denial also sparked widespread criticism from Nigerians on social media, who condemned the decision to reject the CDS\u2014Nigeria\u2019s highest-ranking military officer and principal military adviser to the president.<\/p>\n

The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria acknowledged the media reports but declined to comment on the specifics of the visa denial, citing privacy reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe High Commission of Canada in Nigeria is aware of media reports related to planned travel to Canada by senior officials,\u201d the commission wrote on X. \u201cHowever, for privacy reasons, we are unable to provide any comment on the status of visa applications of specific individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, Ndume emphasized the importance of self-respect, suggesting that Nigerian leaders should reconsider frequent foreign trips.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou brought up the CDS issue and how the NSA reacted\u2014or perhaps overreacted. There\u2019s no doubt that this is a form of disrespect to Nigeria, but we must first respect ourselves,\u201d Ndume said.<\/p>\n

He questioned whether the proper protocol had been followed, stating that official invitations should have been secured before applying for visas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they had an official invitation, and they didn\u2019t get the visa, then they simply don\u2019t go. I\u2019m happy that the CDS himself is not too bothered about it. But if we don\u2019t respect ourselves, this is what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ndume also expressed disbelief that a senior Nigerian military officer could be denied entry to a country like Canada, given Nigeria\u2019s global standing and contributions to international peacekeeping.<\/p>\n
