Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the political unrest and prevent chaos in Osun State.<\/p>\n

A power struggle between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over control of local government secretariats in Osun on Monday reportedly left five people feared dead and numerous others injured, causing tension and fear throughout the state.<\/p>\n

The crisis stemmed from last Monday\u2019s Court of Appeal judgment in Akure, which purportedly reinstated the APC-elected chairpersons and councillors who were sacked in 2022 by Governor Ademola Adeleke.<\/p>\n

While the APC maintained that the judgment explicitly reinstated the local government officials, the state government argued that it did not restore them to office.<\/p>\n

This led to violence between APC members and PDP supporters who opposed the attempt to forcibly take over council secretariats, claiming the life of former council chairperson Remi Abass, among others.<\/p>\n

NANS, however, in a statement signed by the Clerk of the Senate, NANS National Headquarters, Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, on Tuesday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, noted that \u201cthe crisis should be nipped in the bud before it festers.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stated that Osun is one of the states in the Federation that is politically volatile, urging President Tinubu not to fold his arms and allow the state to be engulfed in conflict because of politics.<\/p>\n

Expressing his concerns that the political crisis in Osun is gradually taking the shape of the \u2018Operation-Wet-E\u2019 of the Wild West Region in the 60s, Odunayo stressed that President Tinubu must do everything in his capacity to quench the fire of discord.<\/p>\n

Odunayo also called on the Southwest Governors Forum to wade in and prevail on Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and his predecessor, now Minister of Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, to give peace a chance.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThe political crisis in Osun is becoming worrisome, as no fewer than four people have lost their lives in clashes between APC and PDP supporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cNANS National Headquarters views this with serious concern, and we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the issue and end these deadly clashes. As the president, he should know that Osun is one of the states that is politically volatile; hence, efforts must be made to nip the crisis before it escalates into bloodier clashes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe should also know that development and growth thrive where there is peace; Osun must not be allowed to be turned into a theatre of political war by the APC and PDP. Political solutions must be sought to prevent the replay of \u2018Operation-Wet-E\u2019 that engulfed the then Western Region of the country as a result of political rivalry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hereby call on the Southwest Governors Forum to also wade into the matter and prevail on Governor Ademola Adeleke and his predecessor, now Minister of Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, to give peace a chance. Both should call their supporters to order before further damage is done,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

The student leader, however, urged security agencies to rise to the occasion, arrest the perpetrators of violence, and restore peace and order to the state.<\/p>\n
