{"id":151344,"date":"2025-02-19T09:14:13","date_gmt":"2025-02-19T08:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/benue-assembly-recommends-suspension-of-chief-judge-over-alleged-abuse-of-office"},"modified":"2025-02-20T22:55:54","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T21:55:54","slug":"benue-assembly-recommends-suspension-of-chief-judge-over-alleged-abuse-of-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/benue-assembly-recommends-suspension-of-chief-judge-over-alleged-abuse-of-office","title":{"rendered":"Benue Assembly recommends suspension of Chief Judge over alleged \u2018abuse of office\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Benue State House of Assembly has recommended the suspension of the state\u2019s Chief Judge, Maurice Ikpambese, over alleged abuse of office and gross misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution came after Governor Hyacinth Alia sent a letter to the assembly detailing five allegations against Ikpambese.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was read on Tuesday by House Majority Leader Saater Tiseer.<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter, the Chief Judge is accused of abuse of office by issuing a directive that overturned the Benue State Electoral Law, which was passed by the assembly and assented to by the governor, as well as alleged isappropriation and mismanagement of the judiciary\u2019s budgetary allocation.<\/p>\n<p>Others include engagement with politicians to influence judicial outcomes, indirect participation and incitement of industrial actions against the state executive., acts of bribery, corruption, and favoritism, allegedly placing cronies in unmerited positions.<\/p>\n<p>During deliberations, Peter Ipusu, the Chief Whip of the house, criticized the CJ for tampering with the state\u2019s electoral law.
