Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The federal government has said that, contrary to fears expressed in some quarters, Nigeria is not at risk of food scarcity.<\/p>\n

The Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Abdullahi, stated this on Channels Television\u2019s Politics Today programme on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Abdullahi said President Bola Tinubu understands the importance of food security, which prompted him to declare a state of emergency just two months after assuming office.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me respond to the headline I saw you discussing\u2014risk of food scarcity. Nigeria is not at risk of food scarcity; it has never been and, by the grace of God, never will be.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I want to clarify is that when you say \u2018scarcity\u2019, it implies that food is not available at all. Nigeria has not experienced that. What has happened is that there are various dynamics at play. The economics of food extends beyond the immediate sector; there are macroeconomic factors involved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to him, in addition to the food silos managed by the federal government, several states have adopted the buffer stock strategy and have stored food as a reserve, further strengthening food security.<\/p>\n

The minister also countered the narrative that Nigeria is not food-sufficient, insisting that as long as one can go to the market and find all types of food, there is no cause for alarm.<\/p>\n

He stated that Nigeria has made significant progress in meeting its rice production demand, adding that the country\u2019s rice production is sufficient, though Nigerians\u2019 taste preferences still favour imported varieties.<\/p>\n

Abdullahi assured Nigerians that President Tinubu is determined to curb food inflation, which has been on the rise recently, and stabilise prices to ensure that every Nigerian can afford to eat whatever they choose.<\/p>\n
