{"id":151784,"date":"2025-02-20T20:25:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T19:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/nosdra-confirms-oil-leak-from-shells-underwater-pipeline-in-bayelsa"},"modified":"2025-02-20T23:49:21","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T22:49:21","slug":"nosdra-confirms-oil-leak-from-shells-underwater-pipeline-in-bayelsa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/nosdra-confirms-oil-leak-from-shells-underwater-pipeline-in-bayelsa","title":{"rendered":"NOSDRA confirms oil leak from Shell\u2019s underwater pipeline in Bayelsa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, has confirmed that it has received a report of an oil spill incident at Obololi, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa.<\/p>\n<p>According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the leak from the 16-inch Nun River-Kolo Creek pipeline has discharged an unverified volume of crude oil into River Nun, affecting adjoining areas around Obololi.<\/p>\n<p>A statement signed by Chukwuemeka Woke, Director-General of NOSDRA, and made available to NAN on Thursday in Yenagoa, stated that the incident is under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Woke explained that the agency received the report on Monday and subsequently convened a Joint Investigative Visit, JIV, to the site to determine the cause of the spill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe JIV was led by NOSDRA and comprised relevant stakeholders, including SPDC (the operator), the Bayelsa Ministry of Environment, and the affected community, to establish the factors surrounding the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe JIV is also expected to recommend the necessary regulatory compliance actions to mitigate the impact of the spill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cause of the spill remains unknown, as the suspected leak point\/pipeline is submerged in water, making the JIV inconclusive.
