{"id":152043,"date":"2025-02-21T08:23:11","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T07:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/i-had-nothing-to-do-with-dele-giwas-death-ibb"},"modified":"2025-02-21T08:23:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T07:23:11","slug":"i-had-nothing-to-do-with-dele-giwas-death-ibb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/i-had-nothing-to-do-with-dele-giwas-death-ibb","title":{"rendered":"I had nothing to do with Dele Giwa\u2019s death \u2013 IBB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A former Military President of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, has denied any involvement in the death of the late editor of Newswatch, Dele Giwa.<\/p>\n<p>Giwa was murdered on October 19, 1986, after he opened a package with a bomb at his Ikeja, Lagos residence.<\/p>\n<p>His first son, Billy, handed the parcel to him, saying it was delivered by some unknown persons.<\/p>\n<p>After Giwa\u2019s death at 39 years, the killers remain unknown to date.<\/p>\n<p>His death also marked the death of Newswatch magazine, which was co-founded by Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Mohammed and Dan Agbese.<\/p>\n<p>IBB has said he hopes that one day the mystery behind the murder will be uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>He stated this during the launch of his autobiography, \u2018A Journey in Service\u2019 in Abuja, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an attitude of \u2018we versus the government\u2019 that has remained today,\u201d IBB said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a situation in which the government is adjudged guilty even before the evidence in a case is adduced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Obasanjo civilian administration reopened the Giwa case at the Oputa Panel on Human and Civil Rights, I expected that the police and lawyers would come forward with new evidence as to their findings on the Giwa murder over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing of such happened. The Giwa, like all mysterious murders, has remained unsolved after so many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep hoping will be uncovered in our life time or after us.
