{"id":152105,"date":"2025-02-21T10:40:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T09:40:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/state-creation-cross-river-agitators-only-interested-in-moving-privileges-from-calabar-to-ogoja-social-activist-jalingo"},"modified":"2025-02-22T11:54:37","modified_gmt":"2025-02-22T10:54:37","slug":"state-creation-cross-river-agitators-only-interested-in-moving-privileges-from-calabar-to-ogoja-social-activist-jalingo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/state-creation-cross-river-agitators-only-interested-in-moving-privileges-from-calabar-to-ogoja-social-activist-jalingo","title":{"rendered":"State creation: Cross River agitators only interested in moving privileges from Calabar to Ogoja \u2013 Social activist, Jalingo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A social activist, critic, Agba Jalingo, has slammed the agitators for the creation of Ogoja State, saying most of them lack development plans for the proposed state.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, he described them as power-drunk, claiming that the agitators are only interested in moving sociopolitical privileges from Calabar to Ogoja if it becomes feasible.<\/p>\n<p>Over two weeks ago, the House of Representatives proposed the creation of 29 more states in addition to the present 37.<\/p>\n<p>Before now, there have been critiques by concerned individuals in the state, lamenting that out of the old provinces, it is Ogoja Province\u2014comprising Abakaliki in today\u2019s Ebonyi State and the northern part of Cross River\u2014that has not been created as a state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I see and hear is the mushrooming of groups of entitled individuals and coteries of friends who are rather interested in moving privileges from Calabar to Ogoja so they can own the power to appropriate those privileges without let or hindrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating another layer of power-drunk big men and women in Ogoja, freed from the control of Calabar, whose goal won\u2019t be serving the people but expecting us to venerate them for giving us Ogoja State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He expressed concerns that the proposed state might not effectively generate revenue internally and would almost entirely depend on federal allocations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to be part of the creation of another state where IGR cannot be generated practically and FAAC will be used to service a few individuals while the masses have nothing to benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow will we address the pressure of unfavorable conditions created by the weak linkage between planning and management and between plan preparation and implementation? How will we surmount the constraints in finance generation, rather than relying on handouts from FAAC?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jalingo claimed that there are challenges of unavailable data in many sectors, a lack of commitment among the masses, and inadequate efficiency in public and private sector consultation in the proposed Ogoja State.<\/p>\n<p>He asserted that these development issues have been neglected in Ogoja State creation advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cNot many people on this Ogoja State advocacy train are interested in dedicating time and resources to engender the conversation that will create an Ogoja development agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now, I remain disinterested in this project, and very adamantly too.
