{"id":152414,"date":"2025-02-23T11:44:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-23T10:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/how-shehu-yaradua-others-orchestrated-gowons-ouster-in-1975-ibb"},"modified":"2025-02-26T23:24:51","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T22:24:51","slug":"how-shehu-yaradua-others-orchestrated-gowons-ouster-in-1975-ibb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/how-shehu-yaradua-others-orchestrated-gowons-ouster-in-1975-ibb","title":{"rendered":"How Shehu Yar\u2019Adua, others orchestrated Gowon\u2019s ouster in 1975 \u2013 IBB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Former military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, has revealed how the late Major-General Shehu Yar\u2019Adua orchestrated the removal of Yakubu Gowon as Nigeria\u2019s Head of State in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Babangida made this revelation in his autobiography, A Journey in Service, launched in Abuja last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the relationship between General Gowon and Brigadier Murtala Muhammed was frosty, considering that Muhammed was seen as a \u2018kingmaker\u2019 in bringing Gowon to power, which did not help matters at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs young officers, we could see that Muhammed, idolized by many of us in the army, was quite a handful in matters pertaining to control!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, when the final decision was made in early 1975 to remove the Gowon administration, the feeling was that another military regime would take over and prepare the country for civil rule,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was not surprised when Musa Yar\u2019Adua pulled him aside and suggested that a government change was necessary to save the country and preserve the integrity of the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter our meeting, Yar\u2019Adua co-opted others, including Colonels Paul Tarfa, Alfred Aduloju, Lt-Cols. Muhammadu Buhari (then the director of supply and transport), Sani Bello, and Sani Sami.
