{"id":152780,"date":"2025-02-25T22:17:25","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T21:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/osun-pdp-chairman-sues-igp-over-alleged-unlawful-arrest-plan"},"modified":"2025-02-27T22:47:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T21:47:18","slug":"osun-pdp-chairman-sues-igp-over-alleged-unlawful-arrest-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/parties\/osun-pdp-chairman-sues-igp-over-alleged-unlawful-arrest-plan","title":{"rendered":"Osun PDP chairman sues IGP over alleged unlawful arrest plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Chairman of the Osun State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday Bisi, has filed a suit at the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo to prevent his alleged unlawful arrest by the Nigeria Police.<\/p>\n<p>In the suit, Bisi described the planned arrest as a violation of his fundamental rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement.<\/p>\n<p>The Osun PDP chairman also labelled it an \u201cabuse of the coercive powers\u201d entrusted to the police and the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.<\/p>\n<p>According to the suit: \u201cThe plan by the IGP to arrest the Osun PDP boss is designed to molest and punish him for opposing the IGP\u2019s unethical partisan engagements against the Peoples Democratic Party in the ongoing political tussle in the state and for encouraging his party and members to participate in the just-concluded local government election in Osun State, contrary to the purported security advice given by the IGP to stop the eventually peaceful election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elections proceeded despite a security advisory from the IGP, which Bisi claimed was intended to counter court rulings mandating the polls.<\/p>\n<p>He insisted that both the Court of Appeal and the Osun State High Court had previously ordered the elections to fill council vacancies.<\/p>\n<p>Bisi stated that his decision to follow court orders rather than the IGP\u2019s advisory led to the peaceful conduct of the elections, contradicting the IGP\u2019s warnings and allegedly motivating the arrest plan.<\/p>\n<p>The PDP chairman has asked the court for an injunction to restrain the IGP and his agents from proceeding with the alleged arrest, insisting it is politically motivated and unjustified.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSIEC, had also sued the Inspector General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for breaching fundamental rights.<\/p>\n<p>Also joined in the suit is the OSIEC chairman, Hashim Abioye.<\/p>\n<p>In the suit, the plaintiffs are demanding the sum of two billion naira in damages for the harassment, intimidation, and detention of some ad-hoc staff of the commission who had committed no offence.<\/p>\n<p>It will be recalled that the OSIEC headquarters was sealed off by the police a day before the local government elections on Saturday, 22 February 2025, preventing residents from accessing the commission.<\/p>\n<p>Abioye stated that the commission is taking legal action against the Nigeria Police over the excessive actions of their officers.<\/p>\n<p>He noted: \u201cA security agency is expected to be neutral and provide necessary security for the people of Nigeria. Unfortunately, the reverse is the case. Many of our ad-hoc staff have been arrested for committing no offence, and up till now, no reason has been given by the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that the APC governs at the federal level and controls the security agencies does not give the police the approval to act arbitrarily.
