{"id":154251,"date":"2025-03-07T08:56:04","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T07:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/nigeria-hits-highest-electricity-peak-of-5801-84mw-as-citizens-lament-widespread-darkness"},"modified":"2025-03-07T08:56:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T07:56:04","slug":"nigeria-hits-highest-electricity-peak-of-5801-84mw-as-citizens-lament-widespread-darkness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/nigeria-hits-highest-electricity-peak-of-5801-84mw-as-citizens-lament-widespread-darkness","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria hits highest electricity peak of 5,801.84mw as citizens lament widespread darkness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Transmission Company of Nigeria said Nigeria generated 5,801 megawatts of electricity as of Tuesday, the highest ever in the country with an estimated population of over 200 million.<\/p>\n<p>However, consumers have countered TCN, citing widespread darkness in the country.<\/p>\n<p>At the State House on Thursday, the Managing Director of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, announced that the country recorded an unprecedented generation peak of 5,801.84mw.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cfor the first time in our nation\u2019s history, the power sector recorded a new and unprecedented peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts of electricity on March 4, 2025, at 21:15 hours \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abdulaziz said the state-owned TCN successfully transmitted all the generated electricity.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the company targets 10,000 megawatts of transmission capacity to Nigerians in less than two years.<\/p>\n<p>However, he did not clearly establish how this target can be achieved.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2025, available average generation capacity stood at 5,432mw, according to data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the celebrated 5,801mw electricity generation in the country, the majority of Nigerians have continued to grapple with inadequate power in the heat period.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, Executive Director of<\/p>\n<p>The Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy, Chief Princewill Okorie, said that TCN is celebrating failure and inefficiency in the country\u2019s power sector.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, it is shameful to celebrate 5,801.84 in electricity generation capacity at a time when the majority of Nigerians grapple with darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are celebrating failure. TCN is celebrating when more Nigerians are in darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA generation capacity of 5,801.84 for over 200 million people is not shameful? It is not worth celebrating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the consumers that celebrate, if at all, there is improved power supply, not the operators.
