{"id":155870,"date":"2025-03-20T11:07:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T10:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/state-of-emergency-all-eyes-on-nass-nigerians-kick-against-alleged-plans-to-use-voice-votes"},"modified":"2025-04-03T18:19:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T17:19:31","slug":"state-of-emergency-all-eyes-on-nass-nigerians-kick-against-alleged-plans-to-use-voice-votes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/state-of-emergency-all-eyes-on-nass-nigerians-kick-against-alleged-plans-to-use-voice-votes","title":{"rendered":"State of Emergency: All eyes on NASS \u2013 Nigerians kick against alleged plans to use voice votes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>There are allegations that the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives have concluded plans to use voice votes to secure the approval of the chambers for the State of Emergency recently declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.<\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST reports that the red chamber on Wednesday differed a motion to approve the proclamation of a State of Emergency till the next legislative date after stepping down a motion sponsored by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele.<\/p>\n<p>A two-third majority votes must be achieved for the National Assembly to approve the proclamation.<\/p>\n<p>An activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju earlier raised an alarm alleging that the president of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio was planning to use voice votes to secure the approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cURGENT INFO FROM A SENATOR: There is an urgent need to let Nigerians know that both Akpabio and Abass plan to use voice vote this morning to pass the emergency vote\u201d, he posted on his Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawyer, such would be \u201ccontrary to the 1999 Constitution as amended which stipulates 2\/3rd votes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a popular Nigerian businessman, Atedo Peterside said in a post on his official X handle that a \u201ctwo-thirds majority cannot be achieved via a voice vote\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201con the Rivers State Crisis, all eyes are on the National Assembly.
