Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Benue State Government has reported an increase in the number of poor and vulnerable individuals recorded in its social register, which now stands at 1.7 million.<\/p>\n

Professor Jerome Andohol, Director General of the State Budget and Economic Planning Commission, revealed this on Monday during a three-day training for desk officers, grievance redress officers, and enumerators.<\/p>\n

The training focused on updating the State Social Register and integrating the National Identity Number, NIN.<\/p>\n

He noted that the current administration inherited a register containing 1.6 million individuals and has since expanded it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time this administration took office, the number of Poor and Vulnerable Households (PVHHs) was 417,743, with a total of 1,661,039 individuals. Since then, the figures have risen significantly, with PVHHs increasing to 496,993 and individuals reaching 1,746,411,\u201d Andohol stated.<\/p>\n

Since Governor Hyacinth Alia assumed office, an additional 79,250 households and 85,372 individuals have been added to the register.<\/p>\n

Andohol also pointed out challenges in the Federal Government\u2019s Conditional Cash Transfer program, noting that many beneficiaries have struggled to access funds due to incorrect account details and a lack of unique identifiers.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo address this issue, the Federal Government has mandated that all potential beneficiaries listed in the social register must have their account details linked with NIN,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

He emphasized the importance of the current exercise, which aims to train enumerators on integrating NIN with beneficiaries\u2019 account details, ensuring that those already in the register without linked NINs can update their records.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis exercise is critical for ensuring that our people benefit from the Federal Government\u2019s palliative measures designed to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal. It also promotes financial inclusion and reduces cash-based transactions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode, underscored the significance of the NIN, describing it as a vital tool for national identity and a means to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of social welfare programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe integration of NIN into the Social Register is not just a technical upgrade; it is a step toward making our social welfare initiatives more inclusive and effective, as envisioned by the Tinubu-led administration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), the Head of Communications, Timiyeyin Ayodele-Ozoya, highlighted the importance of the State Social Register in social safety net programs, as it serves as a unified database for targeted interventions.<\/p>\n

The three-day training was organized by the Benue State Government through the State Operation Coordinating Unit and the Benue State Budget and Economic Planning Commission, in collaboration with NASSCO and the National Identity Management Commission.<\/p>\n
