Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A group, Obele Women Empowerment Foundation, OWEF has made a case for gender equality, saying it would champion the rights to inheritance of property by girl children in Igboland.<\/p>\n

The founder of the group, Mrs Amara Oyeka stated this on Tuesday, during the official launch of the foundation in Awka, Anambra State capital.<\/p>\n

Mrs Oyeka, who is also a Senior Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Internally Generated Revenue, said beyond fighting against traditional practices affecting women, it will also champion gender equality and also provide empowerment for women.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cWe want to fight traditional practices that affect women. We want a society where the joy of having a boy child during childbirth will be the same as having a girl child. We want a place where a girl child who is oldest can get the same opportunity to be in the meeting of the family like their male counterpart.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this launching today, in years to come, we will grow to be the voice of women, we will champion a world where the woman will also get inheritance from their parents in Igboland. The life of a woman is beyond just getting a BSc, getting married and leaving to go and bear children for men.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-founder of the foundation, Dr Greg Ezeilo who is also the chairman of Anambra Internal Revenue Services (AiRS) said the group would sensitize women well enough to know their right and be able to stand on their feet.<\/p>\n
