We are overwhelmed and deeply concerned about the steep rise in drug addiction in Cross River State.

“In most streets of Calabar and other major towns in the state, young people are running mad as a result of drug abuse and addiction.

“It’s not a hereditary problem but drug abuse. Go to the psychiatric hospital in Calabar—90% of the inmates are youths who became drug addicts. In many drug wards, those with milder conditions are rejected to accommodate more severe cases.”

According to the narcotics officer, drug abuse affects everyone, directly or indirectly, and drug-induced crimes are now rampant in Cross River.

“The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has a list of over 3,000 substances, and a significant number of them are abused in Cross River, especially Cannabis Sativa, commonly called ‘Igbo’ or marijuana.

“Our future leaders are dying, and many others are trapped in drug addiction. Faceless individuals are using them as conduits to make money while their own biological children are in safe environments.

“Everyone should stand up against drug abuse in the state and Nigeria as a whole. This is not the burden of NDLEA alone,” she emphasized.

National President of NIDSUG, Comrade Scott Ogunsere, said that after the campaign in Cross River, they would take it to the other eight states in the region.

“We’ll take this campaign against social vices to all nine Niger Delta states and across the country.

“We appeal to students and youths to shun drugs, cultism, pipeline vandalism, kidnapping, and other crimes,” he urged.

Acting Governor of the state, Dr. Peter Odey, represented by the Special Adviser on Student Affairs, Eyam Joseph Kelvin, stated that the government is against cybercrimes and is providing alternatives to dissuade youths from engaging in them.

“We’re doing all we can to gainfully engage the youths by providing opportunities across various sectors. Globally, cybercrime is illegal.
