Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of unauthorized structures after the expiration of the amnesty period granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.<\/p>\n

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) began enforcement operations in Ogudu GRA, reinforcing the administration\u2019s commitment to upholding urban planning regulations and safeguarding public safety.<\/p>\n

In an official statement released on Monday, the government clarified that the exercise follows the December 31, 2024, deadline, which required property owners to regularize their documentation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has commenced the removal of illegal structures across the state following the expiration of the amnesty period granted by the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe exercise began in Ogudu GRA, where officials of the Agency moved in to enforce compliance with the state\u2019s urban planning regulations following the expiration of the amnesty period, which was extended to 31st of December, 2024, to allow property owners to regularize their documents,\u201d the statement read in part.<\/p>\n

Permanent Secretary of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, stated that the enforcement initiative is designed to restore order in Lagos\u2019 physical planning and mitigate structural risks, including building collapses.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the state government had given property owners sufficient time to secure the required approvals before proceeding with demolitions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government extended the amnesty period to December 31, 2024, giving owners of unapproved buildings sufficient time to regularize their documents. Despite multiple warnings and notices, some residents chose not to comply, leaving LASBCA with no choice but to take action,\u201d Oki stated.<\/p>\n
