Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Students Union (BSU) has launched a fundraising campaign to support the burial of Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver who was fatally shot in Centre City, Philadelphia, on April 16, 2025.<\/p>\n

Bolaji, a husband, father, and grandfather, was tragically shot while waiting for a passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Lounge.<\/p>\n

Authorities have reported that the shooting occurred during a dispute when two men exited a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee and opened fire, striking Bolaji in the back of the head. Bolaji later crashed his vehicle a block away on Chestnut Street. The suspects remain at large.<\/p>\n

In response to this senseless tragedy, Alex Morris, President of the BSU Philadelphia Chapter, initiated a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $25,000 to assist the Bolaji family during this difficult time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we share the sudden, senseless loss of Olatunji Bolaji\u2014a 77-year-old father, grandfather, husband, and devoted rideshare driver murdered while simply doing his job,\u201d the fundraiser\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n

As of the latest update, the campaign has raised $1,712 from 19 donations. The funds are intended to cover the immediate needs of the family, including $12,000 for funeral and memorial service expenses, $5,000 for living expenses during this period of grief, and $3,000 for counseling services for family members.<\/p>\n

Any excess funds will be allocated to create a trust for Bolaji\u2019s grandchildren, including his unborn grandchild.<\/p>\n

Morris confirmed that all donations would be deposited directly into the account of Bolaji\u2019s widow, Charice Bolaji.<\/p>\n

In the event that she cannot receive the funds directly, Morris will personally ensure the donations are delivered with full transparency and receipts.<\/p>\n

\u201cOla drove countless neighbors home safely; it\u2019s our turn to bring his family safely through their darkest hour,\u201d said Morris. \u201cAny amount\u2014$5, $50, or $500\u2014eases the family\u2019s burden.<\/p>\n
