{"id":160389,"date":"2025-04-25T19:21:47","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T18:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/efcc-promises-action-on-petition-against-mele-kyari-as-lawyers-csos-storm-commission-with-protest-letter"},"modified":"2025-04-28T18:36:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T17:36:03","slug":"efcc-promises-action-on-petition-against-mele-kyari-as-lawyers-csos-storm-commission-with-protest-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/efcc-promises-action-on-petition-against-mele-kyari-as-lawyers-csos-storm-commission-with-protest-letter","title":{"rendered":"EFCC promises action on petition against Mele Kyari as lawyers, CSOs storm commission with protest letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A group of lawyers and members of civil society organizations (CSOs) on Monday stormed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja to submit a petition against Mele Kyari, former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).<\/p>\n<p>The commission\u2019s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, who received the petition on behalf of the chairman, said the commission will look into the allegations raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issues raised in the petition will be looked into and will be addressed,\u201d Oyewale said.<\/p>\n<p>The petition alleged that Kyari perpetrated monumental fraud, tax evasion, economic sabotage and abuse of office during his tenure as NNPCL boss, from July 2019 to February 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A CSO, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, led by Asika Raymond, alleged that Kyari collaborated with certain consultants and contractors to conceal the actual cost of refineries rehabilitation projects and evade taxes due to the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>They pointed to the Port Harcourt Refinery, where the group alleged that the NNPCL under Kyari\u2019s leadership expended $1.5 billion on its rehabilitation, despite initial estimates of $1 billion for the repair of three national refineries.<\/p>\n<p>The petitioners questioned the transparency and accountability of the payments made to consultants and contractors handling the refineries\u2019 rehabilitation projects.<\/p>\n<p>The petition also alleged that crude oil allocations were diverted and financial transactions were carried out under the guise of \u201cpipeline security\u201d at a suspicious rate of 80,000 barrels per day, with no transparent process or accountability mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the AKK Gas Pipeline Project, initially valued at $5 billion, was said to be riddled with irregularities in contract awards and execution.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the petitioners raised concerns about fuel subsidy fraud, citing repeated allegations of inflated imports and false claims.<\/p>\n<p>They also questioned the value of NNPCL\u2019s crude-backed loans, which totaled $21.565 billion since 2019, with questionable purposes and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The petition added: \u201cThere is credible information that crude oil allocations were diverted, and financial transactions were carried out under the guise of \u2018pipeline security\u2019 at a suspicious rate of 80,000 barrels per day, with no transparent process or accountability mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AKK Pipeline Project, initially valued at $5 billion has been riddled with irregularities in the award and execution of contracts. Despite several budgetary provisions and foreign financing arrangements, there is little physical progress or transparency in fund utilization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been repeated allegations of fraud tied to the payment of fuel subsidy. It is instructive to note that while the rest of the world witnessed a decline in fuel consumption in 2020 due to COVID, NNPCL increased its imports of petroleum products during the same period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Mele Kyari, NNPCL took various crude-backed loans which hit $21.565 billion since 2019. Aside from mortgaging future production, the structure of these loans disadvantaged Nigeria as the upside from trading Nigeria\u2019s crude in the international market was ceded to traders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe former GCEO also supervised massive spending on oil exploration activities in the aforementioned states.
