{"id":160399,"date":"2025-04-25T19:23:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T18:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/tribunal-upholds-fccpcs-220m-fine-against-meta"},"modified":"2025-04-28T18:37:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T17:37:13","slug":"tribunal-upholds-fccpcs-220m-fine-against-meta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/tribunal-upholds-fccpcs-220m-fine-against-meta","title":{"rendered":"Tribunal upholds FCCPC\u2019s $220m fine against Meta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has upheld the $220 million fine imposed on Meta Platforms Incorporated by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC.<\/p>\n<p>The Director for Corporate Affairs of FCCPC, Ondaje Ijagwu, made this announcement in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Ijagwu said that the tribunal also awarded the commission $35,000 to cover the investigation costs.<\/p>\n<p>Meta and WhatsApp appealed the fine imposed by the FCCPC after the regulator concluded that the companies engaged in discriminatory and exploitative practices against Nigerian consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The fine arose from a 38-month joint investigation initiated by the FCCPC and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, into the conduct, privacy practices, and consumer data policies of Meta Platforms and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read in part, \u201cThe Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal today delivered its judgment in the appeal filed by Meta Platforms Incorporated (Facebook) and WhatsApp LLC against the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), affirming the Commission\u2019s authority and actions in nearly all the contested issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tribunal specifically determined that the Commission complied with prevailing laws, discharged its mandate, and exercised its powers within the confines of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
