{"id":161222,"date":"2025-05-03T11:58:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T10:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/tiv-farmers-protest-alleged-land-seizure-by-nasarawa-government"},"modified":"2025-05-03T11:58:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T10:58:58","slug":"tiv-farmers-protest-alleged-land-seizure-by-nasarawa-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/tiv-farmers-protest-alleged-land-seizure-by-nasarawa-government","title":{"rendered":"Tiv farmers protest alleged land seizure by Nasarawa government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Tension flared in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Friday as hundreds of Tiv farmers marched through the streets of Lafia, protesting what they described as the illegal seizure of their ancestral farmlands by the state government.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators, drawn from several Tiv-speaking communities including Ayakeke, Osula, China, Shankodi, Udugh, Ikychiha, Utsuwa, and Daura, carried placards and sang songs of resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Their message was clear: the government\u2019s proposed agricultural development plans cannot come at the expense of their ancestral heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for the protesters, Benjamin Tyoga, accused the government of sidelining the affected communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe no longer trust the governor\u2019s assurances. These lands belong to our ancestors. If the government truly meant well, we should have been consulted. Instead, officials just started visiting our lands without telling us anything,\u201d Tyoga said.<\/p>\n<p>He also criticized Governor Abdullahi Sule\u2019s insistence on meeting only with selected community leaders rather than directly engaging with the farmers whose lands are at stake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the people affected. Why should we send leaders when we can speak for ourselves?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Women and elders joined the demonstration, pointing out the deep cultural ties the Tiv people have to their land.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Terhemba Iveren, one of the elderly protestors, declared, \u201cThis land is our home and our history. We are not against development, but you don\u2019t erase people\u2019s existence in the name of progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the protest, Governor Sule urged calm and defended his administration\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet your leaders come and speak with me. Don\u2019t send troublemakers. If you send troublemakers, it will be difficult for us to have peace,\u201d the governor said, adding that all land ultimately belongs to the state under Nigerian law, but compensation would be considered.<\/p>\n<p>However, his comments did little to ease tensions.<\/p>\n<p>Community leader, Iorliam Aondofa demanded a more transparent and inclusive process, saying, \u201cThe governor must return and meet with us in a town hall setting. Not just walk the land and leave. We all deserve to be heard\u2014that is what democracy is about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Land rights advocate, Comrade Isaac Gbande issued a stern warning, stating the situation could escalate if the government fails to follow due process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just a development issue\u2014it\u2019s a human rights matter.
