Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Defense and security experts have identified a faulty recruitment system in the Nigerian armed forces as being a major reason for the inefficiency of the forces.<\/p>\n

The experts, at a media and civil society training in Yola, said the professional quality of the armed forces depends on the manpower in place.<\/p>\n

The Defense and Security Program Manager of Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Mr Jimoh Abubakar who was a resource person at the event, said the armed forces are increasingly failing to protect the nation owing largely to irregularities in recruitment, deployment, promotion and remuneration across the various defense and security institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe infractions are impediments to effective provision of defense and security in Nigeria,\u201d Abubakar said.<\/p>\n

During the training on recruitment system in the armed forces vis-a-vis performance, as organised by CISLAC and Transparency International with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, another resource person, a university don, Dr Adejoh Sunday, said recruitments which are supposed to seek the very best to take up personnel often attract some of the worst instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recruitment officers qualify people who are not qualified and disqualify those who have the required qualification, leaving the armed forces as breading grounds for the unfit,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

Both Abubakar and Sunday concluded that a change of orientation is necessary and this should apply to all Nigerians.<\/p>\n

They said every Nigerian right now looks up to someone close to him or her who is in high office to get a job for him or her, with little regard for qualification, explaining that pressure on recruitment officers and resultant corruption of the recruitment process can only be lifted if all Nigerians accept that merit alone should decide who gets employed for any office.<\/p>\n
