Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, on Saturday held its inaugural general meeting in Abia State under the stewardship of newly appointed acting State Chairman, Eugene Okonta.<\/p>\n

The meeting which was held in Umuahia was attended by OYC National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, who used the platform to set a new tone for youth engagement, accountability and Igbo solidarity.<\/p>\n

Delivering his address, Igboayaka charged OYC members to adopt the organization\u2019s ethos of \u2018Service Above Self\u2019, and stressed that progress in the South-East depends on young people becoming active stakeholders in community development.<\/p>\n

In a significant announcement, Igboayaka declared the immediate dissolution of all existing OYC structures in Abia, saying that state and local government elections would soon be held in the state.<\/p>\n

Igboayaka who acknowledged internal issues within the parent body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, posited that OYC as a watchdog would check excesses, restore integrity and maintain healthy relationship with security agents.<\/p>\n

According to Igboayaka, some members of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership in the past were complicit in the controversial \u2018Operation Python Dance\u2019, which he said caused harm to Igbo youths.<\/p>\n

Igboayaka also urged his members not to support political candidates based on their party affiliation but based on their commitment to the development of Igbo land.<\/p>\n

In a maiden speech as acting chairman, Eugene Okonta assured the Ohanaeze Youth Council members of a transformative tenure that would reposition OYC in Abia State, as a model for others.<\/p>\n
