{"id":162882,"date":"2025-05-17T10:46:49","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T09:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/were-limiting-nigerias-potential-when-we-fail-women-minister-tijani"},"modified":"2025-05-17T11:53:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T10:53:16","slug":"were-limiting-nigerias-potential-when-we-fail-women-minister-tijani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/were-limiting-nigerias-potential-when-we-fail-women-minister-tijani","title":{"rendered":"We\u2019re limiting Nigeria\u2019s potential when we fail women \u2013 Minister Tijani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has urged the private sector to invest in women-led tech hubs and support workplace policies that empower women in society.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister, Dr Bosun Tijani, made this call on Friday in Abuja, during a press conference to mark this year\u2019s World Telecommunications and Information Society Day 2025 (WTISD-25) celebration coming up on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the event is celebrated globally by the Telecommunications Community all over the world every May 17.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s WTISD-25 is: \u201cGender Equality in Digital Transformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tijani, represented by the ministry\u2019s Director of National Frequency, Adeyemo Olugbenga, said that the private sector players should adopt gender-responsive practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must ensure that no one, especially women and girls, is left behind. The digital economy is not just about infrastructure and innovation but about people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen half of our population faces barriers to access, skills and leadership in tech, we are not just failing women, we are limiting Nigeria\u2019s potential<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s theme is not just timely, it is imperative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister urged educational institutions to break stereotypes by encouraging girls to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) from primary school to University.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, while Nigeria has achieved 46.2 per cent broadband penetration, a large percentage of Nigerian women do not own a smartphone, hindering their ability to access online services and economic opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivil Society and media should amplify the stories of women breaking barriers in tech and hold stakeholders accountable for inclusive policies<\/p>\n<p>See also Minister calls for implementation of STI policies for national development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen and boys should be allies in challenging biases and creating a culture of equality in tech spaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He called on stakeholders to come together and build a future where gender equality is not just a goal, but a reality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
