Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. George Agbakahi has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will have a smooth sail to his second term in office.<\/p>\nAgbakahi spoke amid mobilization by opposition politicians to unseat the president in 2027.<\/p>\n
However, the party chieftain said based on several socio-economic milestones President Tinubu had accomplished, he would have easy ride to second term.<\/p>\n
Agbakahi, who is also South East leader of Tinubu Support Organization and member of 2023 Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Media and Publicity Directorate, made the prediction during an Arise News Television interview in Abuja on Monday.<\/p>\n
He pointed at the gradual decline in inflation figures, increase in public revenue, and increase in foreign reserves of the nation among other successes as the reasons for his optimism.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cI believe the two years of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in office have been marked by a lot of successes. I\u2019m quite aware that you listened to the news the other day when it was reported that inflation in Nigeria has declined to 23.7 percent.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s also on record that the public revenue generally increased by 4.5 percent of the GDP in 2024. This was really described by the World Bank as a remarkable feat. And all these accomplishments came as a result of the extrication of the fuel subsidy as well as the unification of the exchange rate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe president has done a whole lot, when President Tinubu came in, I think some time in 2022 or early part of 2023 we were servicing debt in this country with 97 percent of our revenue but currently as we speak we only service debt with about 68 percent of the revenue.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur national debt has come down considerably from 108 billion dollars to about 94 billion and just recently, the administration was able to pay off IMF COVID debt of about 3.5 billion dollars. I think a whole lot is happening. We have recorded a trade surplus of 14.31 billion in this 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n
Agbakahi cited the introduction of students\u2019 loans (NELFUND) by the current administration, which he said had removed huge financial burden on parents and students alike thereby making education more accessible to the not too privileged members of the society.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe president has put smiles on the faces of parents in this country. Education is now accessible both to the ordinary man in this country.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far, N54.2 billion has been disbursed both to the universities as tuition as well as to students as stipend.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur GDP has grown since he came in, it has gone up to 3.85 percent, when he came in it was about 3.15.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook at FIRS, revenue generation in this country. Before Tinubu came on board FIRS was generating merely about N10.1 trillion, as at 2024 it generated about N21 trillion. So a lot has been done,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
He noted that Nigeria was facing life-threatening economic and security challenges before President Tinubu came on board and enunciated drastic measures like subsidy removal on petroleum products and currency adjustments which have brought some other temporary challenges and hardships that are gradually easing off now.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are now getting a little bit of food security. I was listening to the Managing Director of BUA, and he was saying, which is true, that the price of rice has also gone down.<\/p>\n
\u201cGenerally before President Tinubu came on board, a lot of states were unable to pay their bills, but since President Tinubu came on board there has been 300 percentage increase in FAAC allocation to states which has never happened to any administration in this country, states are able to pay their bills; salaries of workers are no longer being owed by states, there has never been ASUU strike since President Tinubu came on board, the last time was in 2022.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore Tinubu came in, the economy was battered in this country, so he came in and instituted pretty tough reforms. But you have to understand that it takes time. It\u2019s just like somebody who just came out of surgery; it takes some time to heal. But so far the economy is coming up in several facets of the economy. There is improvement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He stressed that in the area of employment opportunities, the president believes sincerely that it is not the duty of the government alone to provide employment opportunities to Nigerians and in that respect the President has tried all his best to provide the enabling environment for the private sector to participate in providing employment opportunities.<\/p>\n
On mass defections of other politicians from other parties to the APC, and possible implosion in the party, Agbakahi said leaders of the party, including President Tinubu himself, the national chairman, Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje and Sen Hope Uzodimma among others have enough political experience to manage the situation<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cDefections are parts and parcel of party politics, it\u2019s not only in Nigeria but other places. Going to US, Michael Fox, a Republican House of Rep man defected from Democratic Party to the Republican, so many of them.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven President Trump himself; have you forgotten that President Trump who is now the president of the United States was once a Democrat between 2001 and 2009 before he now joined the Republican Party and he is now the president of his country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is nothing wrong with the defections. The defection you are seeing like I said is part and parcel of party politics. The latest which is a huge boost for APC is the defection of Sen Adamu Alero, Sen Abdulahi as well as Sen Garba of Kebi state.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a boost to the party in the North West. Mind you, Sen Alero is one politician in Nigeria that can win an election in any party. You remember when he joined PDP from APC he also won a senate seat, so it\u2019s huge.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook at what happened in Delta a couple of weeks ago where the governor of the state, the former governor and the entire party apparatus of PDP now joined APC.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my view I believe all these defections are strong validation of the renewed hope agenda of President Ahmed Tinubu and to tell you the truth I see it as a strong re-affirmation of the person of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his policies by all these defectors.\u201d<\/p>\n
He dismissed insinuations in some quarters that some of the defectors were running away from EFCC prosecutions for fraud, corruption and other offences, insisting that \u201cPolitics is pretty dynamic and it\u2019s based on personal interest and apart from personal interest, it\u2019s also based on community interest.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of these people that are defecting, have come to find out that APC as a party is a party that has the interest of the populace at heart, they have looked at the good works the president is doing. Are they not hearing the news reports of inflation coming down and so many things happening in this administration?<\/p>\n
\u201cSo they are trying to join the party they also see have the ability to protect their interests as well as winning the next election which is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n
He maintained that the party hierarchy had the capacity to manage what may be conflicting interests of members in states like Delta, which may threaten the cohesion in the party.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not have any doubt that in the long run they will all come together with a shared goal and common interest. And that common interest is for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win the 2027 presidential election,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
