Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has condemned the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Professor Sa\u2019adatu Hassan Liman, over her refusal to reinstate suspended students, despite an appeal from Governor Abdullahi Sule.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by Deputy National Coordinator, Ogunjimi Isaac, and National Mobilisation Officer, Adaramoye Michael Lenin, the ERC described the Vice-Chancellor\u2019s actions as a show of vicious tyranny and recklessness.<\/p>\n

The group called for the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the affected students.<\/p>\n

The group referenced an appeal made by Governor Sule, reportedly conveyed through his Personal Assistant on Social Media, Godwin Rimi, during Prof Liman\u2019s one-year anniversary event.<\/p>\n

The governor had urged the university leadership to reconsider its decision on the suspended students.<\/p>\n

But according to the ERC, \u201cdespite this plea, Prof. Sa\u2019adatu Hassan Liman has set all reasons aside and refused to reinstate these innocent students who have suffered physical and emotional torment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The controversy dates back to August 2024, when students, including Shekwogaza Godiya Sanda, Timothy Manasseh, and Asan Ukeyima, began mobilizing to protest against a new university policy requiring students to pay N5,000 for each failed course under a new \u201cthird semester\u201d scheme.<\/p>\n

Before the protest could occur, the students were arrested and detained by police, allegedly at the behest of the university authorities.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, on December 9, 2024, the students were suspended by the university for what it termed acts of \u201cincitement.\u201d However, ERC insists the suspension was baseless since the protest never took place.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn any case, the fact is that the planned protest never took place. So, the official basis for their suspension is flawed,\u201d the ERC said.<\/p>\n

The group also accused the Vice-Chancellor of stifling student rights and democratic engagement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a clear revelation of the atrocities of Sa\u2019adatu Hassan Liman, the Vice-Chancellor who is misnamed as \u2018Sweet Mother of NSUK\u2019 but unleashes terrible policies on students,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

ERC further criticized the university\u2019s cancellation of the last Students\u2019 Union election, which it said left students without formal representation.<\/p>\n

They demanded that all suspended students of NSUK be immediately and unconditionally reinstated and called for accountability for those responsible for their arrests and alleged mistreatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe demand that all those culpable in the arrest and torture be made to answer for their crimes,\u201d the group stated.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging Governor Sule\u2019s intervention, ERC urged him to act more decisively.<\/p>\n
