{"id":16390,"date":"2019-10-05T20:00:53","date_gmt":"2019-10-05T20:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=16390"},"modified":"2019-10-05T20:00:53","modified_gmt":"2019-10-05T20:00:53","slug":"tribunal-upholds-wikes-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/tribunal-upholds-wikes-election","title":{"rendered":"Tribunal upholds Wike\u2019s election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal Saturday validated the re-election of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and dismissed the petition filed by the defeated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripplesnigeria.com\/tag\/governorship-candidate\/\">governorship candidate<\/a>\u00a0of the African Action Congress ( AAC), Biokpomabo Awara.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal had earlier dismissed the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Mr. Victor Fingesi, challenging the governor\u2019s victory in the March 9 election in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Wike winner of the election after recording a \u201cmajority of lawful votes\u201d in the election.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice K.B. Olawoyin, declared that both petitioners failed to prove their cases beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Awara and Fingesi failed to adduce evidence to prove that the election was marred by violence and irregularities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe affirm the election of Nyesom Ezenwo Wike as duly elected,\u201d he said said.<\/p>\n<p>The panel declared that Governor Wike won 19 out of the 21 local government areas where elections held, while the petitioner won in two LGAs.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Olawoyin said the petitioners failed to call any witness to give credible evidence that there were malpractices during the election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal Saturday validated the re-election of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and dismissed the petition filed by the defeated\u00a0governorship candidate\u00a0of the African Action Congress ( AAC), Biokpomabo Awara.
