Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Niger State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has given 24 hours to defaulting local government chairmen to remit sales proceeds from subsidised food items distributed to them by the state government.<\/p>\n

It warned that failure to comply would attract penalties, including suspension.<\/p>\n

The chairman of the House Standing Committee, Bello Bako, during an interface with the 25 local government chairmen on the directive of the state governor, said that for over two months after the collection of the food items, only four local government areas, namely, Bosso, Paikoro, Suleja, and Rafi, have completed remittance of sales proceeds to the state.<\/p>\n

He explained that according to a report submitted by the council chairmen, some local governments are still owing significant amounts, with Chanchaga owing N65 million and Edati owing N75 million, among others.<\/p>\n

Decrying the development, Bako said, \u201cThe efforts of some local government chairmen are frustrating the governor\u2019s initiatives. Now, with Sallah approaching, the governor should be planning new initiatives to curtail costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the chairmen lamented the bad condition of the foodstuffs when they reached the various councils.<\/p>\n

The chairman of Agwara Local Government, who is also the ALGON chairman, Iliyasu Zakari, expressed worries about the damaged state of the grains as well as logistics issues, which caused them to repackage them.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cThis issue is not peculiar to Agwara alone because many other local governments suffered the same experience from the grains supplied by Niger Foods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also, the chairman of Edati Local Government, Sunday Daniel Yisa, hinged non-remittance of the outstanding balance for the food items received from the government to the damaged state of the grains supplied by Niger Foods Company.<\/p>\n
