Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Osun State Police Command has responded to complaints from the Student Union Government of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, regarding the rise in robbery incidents in off-campus student residential areas within the town.<\/p>\n

In a statement made available to DAILY POST on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, revealed that the leadership of the Students\u2019 Union and the school management met with the Area Commander of the Ile-Ife Police Division on Thursday to further address the recurring robbery incidents affecting students in various residential areas across Ile-Ife.<\/p>\n

He disclosed that, following constructive deliberations on the security situation, the Area Commander communicated the following resolutions and actions:<\/p>\n

Deployment of tactical police squads, collaboration with vigilantes and local guards, guidelines to prevent student harassment.<\/p>\n

Ojelabi stated that the Area Commander assured, \u201cWhile the tactical officers will have to conduct comprehensive stop-and-search operations, they have been given strict instructions not to harass students or demand items such as driver\u2019s licenses, as that is beyond their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny officer found harassing a student should be promptly reported for immediate action.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also advised students to remain vigilant, report any suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate authorities, and prioritise their safety at all times.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents are implored not to be intimidated by the presence of policemen around their residential areas but are advised to cooperate with them to achieve the common goal,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST gathered that the Student Union had reported over 30 robbery cases in two weeks involving students.<\/p>\n

The union added that students were now constantly afraid in their own homes.<\/p>\n

In a press release signed by President Omoboriowo Isaac and Secretary-General Babatimehin Kinfeosi, issued on Wednesday, the Student Union stated that the security situation in student-populated areas of Ile-Ife has deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

The union also issued a clear warning that if nothing changed, students would take to the streets in protest.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has stated that it is not responsible for the safety of students outside the university campus.<\/p>\n

The university management made this known while reacting to distress calls by the OAU Student Union Government over the surge in violent robberies targeting students in off-campus residential areas.<\/p>\n

The university\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, on Thursday insisted that he was not aware of any robbery incidents on campus.<\/p>\n

Olanrewaju explained that if such incidents occurred outside the campus, within student residential areas, the school management does not have adequate security coverage beyond the campus.<\/p>\n

While expressing sympathy with the affected students, he maintained that securing off-campus areas is the responsibility of the police, not the university.<\/p>\n

The OAU spokesperson noted that many students live in areas shared with non-students, including local residents and landlords.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cIt is the statutory responsibility of security operatives to police everybody, including those on campus. However, any student staying outside campus should be protected and report robbery cases to the Nigerian Police. They are the ones empowered to handle such cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot single out students when an area where they live is robbed. They are our students, and we sympathise with them. But the management is incapacitated to extend security from the campus to those areas. We can only speak on incidents that happen within the campus premises.\u201d<\/p>\n
