{"id":165493,"date":"2025-06-03T15:31:07","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/lagos-govt-sets-jail-term-for-illegal-waste-disposal"},"modified":"2025-06-03T16:34:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T15:34:01","slug":"lagos-govt-sets-jail-term-for-illegal-waste-disposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/lagos-govt-sets-jail-term-for-illegal-waste-disposal","title":{"rendered":"Lagos govt sets jail term for illegal waste disposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Lagos State Government has introduced strict penalties for environmental offenders, with fines of N250,000 or up to three months imprisonment for those caught dumping refuse illegally or littering public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, during a media briefing held on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the state would no longer tolerate disregard for environmental laws, adding that repeat offenders would be subject to even harsher penalties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerial offenders will face even stiffer punishments,\u201d Wahab warned.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement issued by the Ministry\u2019s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Kunle Adeshina, Wahab\u2019s message signals a renewed crackdown on environmental indiscipline across Lagos, with no tolerance for excuses from violators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won\u2019t drop the ball. We would continue to ramp up our enforcement and sensitisation,\u201d Wahab declared.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner stressed that the state\u2019s ban on cart pushers remains firmly in place, stating that they are major contributors to indiscriminate dumping of waste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me reiterate that the ban on cart pushers has not been lifted because they are the ones who dump wastes indiscriminately across the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents should desist from patronising them and always patronise registered PSP,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He also addressed the growing concern about construction-related violations, particularly by developers who obstruct roads and drains with building materials. Such sites, Wahab emphasized, will be sealed and the owners prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDumping building materials on drains or roads\u201d is a serious offence, and the state intends to clamp down on it firmly, he said.<\/p>\n<p>So far, over 3,000 offenders have been prosecuted by the state but Wahab made it clear that enforcement efforts are far from over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just the beginning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Enforcement teams from the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, brigade, and other allied agencies are now operating continuously to ensure offenders are \u201carrested, prosecuted, named, and shamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One specific area of concern is the misuse of pedestrian bridges, where illegal squatting, open defecation, and petty crime have deterred residents from using the structures safely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey dissuade pedestrians from using the bridges and in turn endanger lives,\u201d Wahab said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
