Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has warned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to respect the rule of law in the process of collection of ground rents in the nation\u2019s capital city, Abuja.<\/p>\n

The former Rivers State governor had published the details of 9,000 debtors in newspapers. He warned against non-payment of their ground rents, adding that their buildings could be sealed.<\/p>\n

The Wike-led FCTA last month warned that it would take possession of about 5,000 affected properties owing ground rents for between 10 and 43 years.<\/p>\n

The administration subsequently commenced the sealing of such buildings and began taking over properties of debtors, including that of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.<\/p>\n

However, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened, and the grace period was extended by 14 days for the defaulters.<\/p>\n

The deadline elapsed on Friday, June 6, 2025, and as the Eid celebrations wind down, the FCTA is expected to resume enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rule of law must be allowed to operate. Yes, people are owing. Too bad. But if you want to collect your money, you must go to court,\u201d Falana said on Channels TV.<\/p>\n

He directed the FCT Minister to the Urban and Regional Planning Tribunal in Abuja.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the body that has the final say on demolition and attempts to seal up properties,\u201d the lawyer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn other words, anybody who is aggrieved by the threat to seal up a property is advised to go to court. We are operating a democracy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
