The meeting, organised by the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, NILOWV, was held on Tuesday at the Oba’s Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Salako-Oyedele noted that the meeting aimed to increase women’s representation in legislative houses, revealing that the ‘Gender Bill’ would focus on creating 74 additional legislative seats in the National Assembly and 108 in the State Assemblies reserved exclusively for women.

She described the bill as a bold and necessary step, opining that it would correct a historical imbalance by offering structured access points for women into legislative spaces, where they have long been underrepresented.

Salako-Oyedele charged all present to take the message to the amarkets, campuses, social media, and the general public, stating that all must understand what the bill is and why it matters. She implored that the amendment should not be approached as a handout but as a hand up, beseeching attendees to build alliances across party lines, gender lines, and generations.

Speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, said no country could flourish without women, stressing the need for women to support themselves, build one another, speak with one voice, and advocate collectively. She also revealed that all bills relating to women were thrown out during the 9th National Assembly.

Contributing, the President of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, Irene Ikyegh, appreciated the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and the NILOWV Ogun State Chapter for their efforts in matters relating to women. She said the bill, if eventually passed, would help increase the number of women in positions of authority, build their confidence, and promote women’s integrity.

The Olowu of Owu, Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola, represented by the Orunto of Owu Kingdom, Chief Biodun Lasile, said the bill was coming at a time when society needed more women in positions of authority. He urged women to pursue education, noting that low levels of literacy remained a significant barrier.

Remarking, representatives from Civil Society Organisations, Mr Adeshina Adesegun and Mrs Olatayo Adeifa of Women in Disability, stated that their organisations have been and would continue to partner with women’s organisations to achieve this mission. They encouraged women to support one another and work together to ensure the bill’s passage, so that by 2027, there would be more seats for women in both the National Assembly and state assemblies.

In her remarks, the President of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, Mrs Elizabeth Egbeyemi, said the event was a call to action and a collective affirmation of their shared belief that inclusive governance was not just a goal but a necessity. She noted that women were underrepresented in legislative spaces, hence the need to create 74 additional legislative seats specifically reserved for women.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Nigeria.
