Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission, TSIEC, has announced the schedule for the 2025 local government elections, confirming that the tenure of current chairmen will end in November.<\/p>\n

The Executive Chairman of TSIEC, Dr. Philip Duwe, made the announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholders\u2019 meeting held at the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Conference Hall in Jalingo.<\/p>\n

The Commission has also issued a formal notice signaling the commencement of preparations for the upcoming elections during the stakeholders meeting.<\/p>\n

Duwe who reaffirmed that under the existing state laws, elected local government chairmen serve a two-year term, said the current tenure will expire in November, 2025.<\/p>\n

He assured the stakeholders that TSIEC is ready to deliver a credible, transparent and inclusive electoral process.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocal government council elections are essential for strengthening democracy at the grassroots. We have established the necessary frameworks to ensure free, fair, and transparent polls,\u201d Duwe said<\/p>\n

Duwe also reiterated the Commission\u2019s commitment to carrying out its constitutional responsibilities without bias, announcing that election guidelines would soon be make public.<\/p>\n

He beckoned at civil servants who are planning to contest in the elections to as a matter of urgency resign at least 90 days before the polls, in line with electoral regulations<\/p>\n

The TSIEC chairman commended the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for implementing reforms aimed at strengthening grassroots governance, describing the initiatives as \u201ctimely and progressive\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the meeting, representatives of political parties and civil society groups emphasized the importance of internal democracy and called on party leaders to allow voters to freely elect candidates of their choice.<\/p>\n
