{"id":167256,"date":"2025-06-17T15:54:29","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T14:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/fuel-price-concerns-as-dangote-refinery-seeks-monopoly"},"modified":"2025-06-17T17:04:07","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T16:04:07","slug":"fuel-price-concerns-as-dangote-refinery-seeks-monopoly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/fuel-price-concerns-as-dangote-refinery-seeks-monopoly","title":{"rendered":"Fuel Price Concerns as Dangote Refinery Seeks Monopoly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Fear has gripped petroleum product marketers and retailers as Dangote Refinery fixed August 15, 2025, to begin distribution of premium motor spirit and automotive gas oil (diesel) nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as Dangote Refinery at the weekend announced a plan to begin distribution of petrol and diesel nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the refinery\u2019s plan is to unleash 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas trucks to supply petrol at no cost to selected customers nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that the move will cause shakeups in the country\u2019s downstream sector.<\/p>\n<p>For petroleum retailers, the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria, and Dangote\u2019s latest, the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, the move spells doom for stakeholders within the country\u2019s oil and gas sector.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria dismissed any potential threat to its members.<\/p>\n<p>The National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, and the spokesperson of IPMAN, Chinedu Ukadike, were divided on Dangote Refinery\u2019s move to adopt a forward integration strategy in separate interviews on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, Gillis-Harry noted that Dangote Refinery\u2019s plan portends hefty implications for all players in the oil downstream sector, including Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the Dangote Refinery\u2019s bigger implication is its gravitation to monopolise the country\u2019s downstream sector.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that it is risky for Dangote Refinery to control the petroleum products supply value chain.<\/p>\n<p>Gillis-Harry lamented that Nigerians will suffer ultimately from Dangote Refinery\u2019s latest move because there will be chances of petrol imposition and fixing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever you see me address, know that it is the mindset of all industry players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether they are NARTO, DAPPMAN, MEMAN, or NOGASA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bigger implication is that the tendency for Dangote Refinery to monopolise the industry and make all the value chains be controlled by one individual is risky for 250 million Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it means is that the storage facility owners will go out of business with investments ranging into billions. Job losses will go with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians will suffer ultimately for it, because once the supply chain is controlled by one company, the chances of the petrol price being inflated and imposed on Nigerians are likely. It is not only the players in the downstream that will suffer, but Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe danger of one company dominating the sector is risky for Nigerians,\u201d he told DAILY POST.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ukadike said that Dangote\u2019s move to begin distribution of petrol and diesel is a good development.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that the move does not necessarily pose a threat to petroleum product marketers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a welcomed development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDangote said he is not into the business of retailing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are always ready to take in Dangote Refinery\u2019s petrol products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe move will not impact IPMAN members negatively.
