Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has awarded a sum of N2.5 million each to nine best graduating students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta, covering the 2015-16 to 2023-24 academic sessions.<\/p>\n

The awardees include Sunday Augustine Chibuzor (2016, Civil Engineering \u2013 Structural), Ogunjimi Titilope Olalekan (2017, Civil Engineering), Owolabi Joseph Okiwatobiloba (2018, Statistics), Adewusi Esther Kemi (2019, Food Technology), Adeoye Folashade Elizabeth (2020, Microbiology and Biology), Azeez Kadijat Oliwaseun (2021, Microbiology and Biology), Ajibola Adeniyi Monday (2022, Civil Engineering), Orisawaye Samuel Emmanuel (2023, Civil Engineering), and Akindele Damilare Michael (2024, Civil Engineering).<\/p>\n

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during the institution\u2019s 15th combined convocation ceremony.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST reports that the ceremony covered nine academic sessions from 2016 to 2024.<\/p>\n

The governor also announced a N2 billion intervention fund for various infrastructural developments at the state-owned Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta.<\/p>\n

Abiodun acknowledged that the decision of his predecessor, Ibikunle Amosun, to relocate the polytechnic to Ipokia and rename it Ogun State Polytechnic was a setback and a challenge to the institution\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n

He revealed that the polytechnic was eventually revived with the help of a fact-finding committee established to rescue the collapsing institution, alongside multiple visits to the National Board of Technical Education, the nation\u2019s regulatory authority for polytechnic education.<\/p>\n

Abiodun said, \u201cWe will be building a 500-seater ultra-modern lecture theatre. We will be constructing the road leading to the auditorium of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be constructing a building for the Department of Accountancy, we will be constructing and equipping a modern library, and this intervention totalled about N2 billion. So, we will invest about N2 billion worth of intervention in this institution.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our usual manner, we will be celebrating the best graduating students over the years. That means the students will receive a cash prize of N2.5 million each, and the icing on the cake is that we will be presenting Moshood Abiola Polytechnic with a school bus to commemorate this combined convocation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, the guest lecturer and Chairman\/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in her lecture titled \u201cDiaspora Perspective and the Influence of STEM in the Globalised World of Today,\u201d highlighted the critical role the Nigerian diaspora plays in national development.<\/p>\n

Highlighting that over 20 million Nigerians are living abroad, she noted that their annual remittance contribution is $20 billion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis contribution is about 5.7 per cent of the GDP of Nigeria and 11 times the Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, for the year. They are well educated, resilient, resource-endowed, exposed to development, alternative development paradigm, exposed to global best practices and patriotic in terms of maintaining filial relationships with Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe impact of the Diaspora on the economy of Nigeria cuts across various sectors from agriculture, education, health, ICT, real estate, transportation, sports, trade and investments,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

In his address, the rector of MAPOLY, Dr Adeoye Odedele Jolaoso, described the convocation as historic, marking a new era of stability, reform, and growth for the institution.<\/p>\n

Jolaoso expressed appreciation to the state government for its continuous support and appealed for further assistance in areas such as alternative energy through solar power, protection against land encroachment, provision of additional lecture halls and office spaces, and completion of the students\u2019 hostel project, among others.<\/p>\n
