{"id":167377,"date":"2025-06-24T20:21:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T19:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/zamfara-govt-denies-securing-n34bn-loan"},"modified":"2025-06-24T20:21:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T19:21:00","slug":"zamfara-govt-denies-securing-n34bn-loan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/zamfara-govt-denies-securing-n34bn-loan","title":{"rendered":"Zamfara govt denies securing \u00a0N34bn loan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Zamfara state government has denied reports that Governor Dauda Lawal collected a \u20a634 billion loan.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by the Governor\u2019s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the government explained that the \u20a634 billion mentioned in public discussions was not a new loan, but part of payments made to service debts inherited from previous administrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Lawal has not taken any loan, whether local or international, since assuming office,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u20a634 billion was used to pay interest on old loans, not new borrowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the 2023 budget, which was prepared and approved before Governor Lawal came into office, included a provision of \u20a653.2 billion for debt servicing. Out of this, \u20a634 billion was spent on interest alone.<\/p>\n<p>The government said these payments show the governor\u2019s commitment to financial discipline and responsible leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question people should be asking is how the loans taken before now were used, because there\u2019s very little development to show for them,\u201d Idris added.<\/p>\n<p>He said the administration is focused on reducing the state\u2019s debt burden and has not applied for any new loan facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident in our record.
