{"id":167419,"date":"2025-06-26T11:20:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T10:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/mixed-reactions-as-kwara-govt-intensifies-urban-renewal-project"},"modified":"2025-06-26T11:20:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T10:20:00","slug":"mixed-reactions-as-kwara-govt-intensifies-urban-renewal-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/mixed-reactions-as-kwara-govt-intensifies-urban-renewal-project","title":{"rendered":"Mixed reactions as Kwara govt intensifies urban renewal project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The ongoing urban renewal project of the Kwara State government is generating mixed reactions, DAILY POST reports.<\/p>\n<p>The urban renewal project appears to have affected mostly road side traders and others who breached the road side setback guideline in the state.<\/p>\n<p>In Ilorin, the state capital, traders in some popular areas have either been evicted or about to be sent packing.<\/p>\n<p>Notable areas affected include Ahmadu Bello Way, Offa Road-Tanke, Emir\u2019s Road- Oja-Oba-Idiape, Maraba-Zango and Unity Road among others.<\/p>\n<p>Findings by DAILY POST showed that of all the affected areas mentioned, Oja-Oba-Idiape area with a high concentration of road side traders, appears to be giving the state government serious concern.<\/p>\n<p>Despite enforcement of the ban imposed on road side traders in the area, they have refused to comply with the directive of the government, which had asked them to relocate to alternative areas in the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>With the team of security personnel and environmental officers on daily patrol in the area, the adamant traders always returned to base after the departure of the team.<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to strengthen the enforcement, a mobile court has also been constituted to try and convict the road side traders caught in the act, with fines or imprisonment imposed on them.<\/p>\n<p>So far, about 30 violators have been arrested and convicted since Monday this week by the mobile court located close to the Emir of Ilorin\u2019s palace, one of the officials informed DAILY POST on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The enforcement exercise, according to a resident who preferred anonymity, has paved the way for free flow of traffic and movement of people contrary to what obtained in the past years in the area.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with our Correspondent, the Iyaloja of Oja-Oba-Idiape, Hajia Mariam Moshood, described the urban renewal project as a welcome development.<\/p>\n<p>She advised the evicted road side traders to relocate to other convenient markets in the state capital, such as Oja-Ago, Ita-Ama, and Mandate market.<\/p>\n<p>Mariam also wondered how some of the traders who owned stores within Oja-Oba-Idiape would prefer to come out to the road side to transact business, abandoning their stores.<\/p>\n<p>The traders\u2019 leader disclosed that the age-long battle to stop road side trading in the area started during the military era without success.<\/p>\n<p>She, however, pleaded to the government to assist the evicted traders with loans or grants and provide alternative location for them.<\/p>\n<p>In his reaction, Chairman, Kwara Geographic Information Service, Malam Abdulkareem Suleiman, frowned at the act of impunity by those bent on distorting the master plan of the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>He lamented that most areas designated as residential quarters had been turned to commercial areas contrary to their original purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Abdulkareem also disclosed that there were several cases of buildings erected without official approval by the government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
