It is the result of strong leadership, a clear vision, and bold action, following the directive of His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, to launch a massive sanitation intervention across the state.”

He explained that the state is working hard to make all 44 LGAs ODF by 2026.

“We are collaborating with UNICEF, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, and other partners to use the Community-Led Total Sanitation model. This has helped people build toilets and change their habits for better hygiene,” Gwarzo added.

The Deputy Governor also highlighted four important parts of the program which include building toilets in public places and homes, supporting self-help groups with funds, strengthening local rules to enforce good sanitation, and involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, and women’s groups as champions of the cause.

In some areas like Dawakin Tofa, Ungogo, and Rano, better sanitation has helped reduce diseases, increased school attendance, and brought pride back to communities.

However, Gwarzo said the work is not finished yet.

“We will continue to work hard, especially in the remaining 18 LGAs and urban areas where sanitation is more challenging. We call on all stakeholders, including government, NGOs, private sector, and partners, to keep supporting us.”

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph T. Utsev, praised Kano’s progress.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Phaleengwah, he said Kano is one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in sanitation. “We encourage Kano to keep up the effort and work towards making the entire state Open Defecation Free,” he said.

Mr. Phaleengwah also thanked the Kano State Government for its commitment and recognized the role of development partners in improving water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure.

The Managing Director of the Kano State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Shamwilu Abdulkadir Issa, said the event was also a chance for sanitation leaders from other Northwest states to learn and work together.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Nigeria.
