{"id":167910,"date":"2025-07-01T16:21:50","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T15:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/activists-demand-probe-of-nmdpra-boss-over-corruption"},"modified":"2025-07-01T17:23:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T16:23:08","slug":"activists-demand-probe-of-nmdpra-boss-over-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/activists-demand-probe-of-nmdpra-boss-over-corruption","title":{"rendered":"Activists Demand Probe of NMDPRA Boss Over Corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Scores of activists under the banner of Concerned Lawyers and Civil Rights Campaigners for Change, on Tuesday, defied the heavy rains to protest at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB.<\/p>\n<p>The activists are demanding a thorough investigation into alleged massive corruption against the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters began their sit-in last Monday with over 500 activists; they have now sustained the agitation notwithstanding the inclement weather, insisting that the weight of the allegations against the NMDPRA boss warrants immediate state action.<\/p>\n<p>The activists are alleging that Ahmed diverted over $5 million in public funds to finance the private foreign education of his four children abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The leader of the rally, Comrade Istifanus Bawa, while addressing newsmen at the protest grounds, maintained that the agitation would continue indefinitely until President Bola Tinubu initiates a transparent probe or suspends Ahmed while the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are here today, drenched by rain but fired up by conscience. The stench of corruption from the NMDPRA is unbearable. If the Attorney General, the ICPC, or the Code of Conduct Bureau refuses to act, then they are complicit in the cover-up of a scandal that disgraces every law-abiding Nigerian,\u201d Bawa said.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that a detailed open letter was recently sent to the Attorney General of the Federation and anti-graft agencies alleging that the NMDPRA boss was using illicit means to fund his children\u2019s education in Swiss schools, including Institut Le Rosey and Aiglon College, where annual fees run into six figures in U.S. dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Bawa claimed the activists received credible intelligence, including financial documents and whistleblower reports, suggesting that the tuition payments were routed through third-party accounts, proxies, and laundered foreign exchange transfers designed to evade scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not some routine misappropriation of funds. We are talking about systemic theft, financial laundering, false asset declarations, and a potential quid pro quo between a regulator and oil companies that benefit from selective approvals. Engr. Farouk Ahmed cannot remain in office one more day if this government is serious about integrity,\u201d Bawa said.<\/p>\n<p>At the ICPC headquarters in Maitama, protesters barricaded the main entrance for several hours while chanting anti-corruption slogans and presented a petition demanding an immediate audit of the NMDPRA CEO.<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights lawyer, Amaka John-Eze, who joined the protest Tuesday morning, said the legal community had a duty to resist \u201cthe normalisation of elite impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time we allow a scandal like this to be swept under the carpet, we embolden the next thief,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allegations are not just about missing money. They are about broken institutions and compromised governance.
