{"id":167959,"date":"2025-07-02T08:45:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T07:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/buhari-was-a-slow-leader-garba-shehu"},"modified":"2025-07-02T09:55:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T08:55:23","slug":"buhari-was-a-slow-leader-garba-shehu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/buhari-was-a-slow-leader-garba-shehu","title":{"rendered":"Buhari was a slow leader \u2013 Garba Shehu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has acknowledged that his principal\u2019s leadership was slow.<\/p>\n<p>Shehu, however, said that Buhari\u2019s slowness was due to the former President\u2019s transformation from a former military ruler to a committed democrat who chose to follow due process.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, while most Nigerians were impatient and wanted quick fixes, Buhari could not be bent as he chose to abide by democratic norms.<\/p>\n<p>Shehu stated this during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday night, \u201cWas he slow? Yeah, he himself had joked about all of that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cAnd he kept on saying, when he came in, he was brash as military head of state, he just did things on impulse, and he ordered people to be locked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this time, as a converted democrat, he needed to follow the due processes that the law says he should follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is wrong with that? Nigerians are very impatient. We want to rush through things. But he says, \u2018no. The democratic process sets the rules. And I must not go against them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While many Nigerians believed that the former president did not know much about things happening under his watch as President, Shehu said that his principal may have been the most aware and well-informed president Nigeria has ever had.<\/p>\n<p>Shehu said that Buhari deliberately allowed his work to speak for itself rather than chase media attention or public applause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis thing about Buhari being unaware, it is totally, totally misplaced.
