Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A heated session of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, held under the factional leadership of Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi, ended with lawmakers accusing Governor Dauda Lawal of reckless spending and financial mismanagement.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers at the parallel plenary, which held on Thursday in the state capital, decried the development as an \u201cabuse of office\u201d and a clear misappropriation of public resources.<\/p>\n

During the session, several members raised concerns about how a medical facility that was initiated by ex-governor Aliyu Mamuda Shinkafi and completed under former governor Abdulaziz Yari at about N1bn could now cost nine times more \u201cjust for mere painting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Questions were also raised about the whereabouts of N200bn reportedly disbursed to state governors by the federal government following the removal of petrol subsidy.<\/p>\n

Each state was said to have received N20bn over a 10-month period.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers further took issue with the state\u2019s handling of the \u20a649bn reportedly released under the NG-CARES program\u2014funds meant to empower youths, particularly those displaced by banditry.<\/p>\n

The fund release, they noted, followed a \u20a62.6bn counter-funding effort initiated by former Governor Bello Matawalle shortly before his handover in 2023.<\/p>\n

In response to these growing concerns, the Assembly demanded a full breakdown and account of how these funds were utilized\u2014giving the executive arm two weeks to respond.<\/p>\n

Beyond the financial scrutiny, insecurity in Zamfara was another major flashpoint. The lawmakers expressed frustration over what they described as the administration\u2019s lack of urgency in responding to worsening violence across the state.<\/p>\n

Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South, did not hold back during the deliberation. According to him, \u201cThe governor was no longer in control over the disturbing situation of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

He lamented that the Gusau\u2013Maru\u2013Talata Mafara road had effectively become a death trap. \u201cGovernment hardly showed sympathy to victims,\u201d he said, revealing that \u201conly recently, the criminals collected N17 million from Morai people for the release of their kinsmen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even after the ransom was paid, Kagara said, the victims were not released. \u201cThe captors collected the ransom and refused to release the victims while the state government remained mute,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

While they acknowledged the governor\u2019s efforts in launching the Community Protection Guards, lawmakers said those sacrifices were being undermined. Many of the guards, they pointed out, were being killed while the state turned a blind eye.<\/p>\n

On his part, Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North) suggested a pivot toward long-term investment in education, calling on the Assembly to establish a free education policy and scholarship scheme for qualified Zamfara youths.<\/p>\n

However, the tone turned sharply political when Hon. Ibrahim Tudu Tukur of Bakura constituency moved for a formal vote of no confidence against Governor Lawal.<\/p>\n

He accused the governor of failing to protect lives and property, fostering division among citizens, and \u201cbetraying the Islamic values of the state,\u201d starting with alleged efforts to undermine the Council of Ulama.<\/p>\n
