{"id":168372,"date":"2025-07-04T21:15:31","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T20:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/csos-urge-lgas-to-embrace-financial-autonomy"},"modified":"2025-07-04T22:21:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T21:21:56","slug":"csos-urge-lgas-to-embrace-financial-autonomy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/economy\/csos-urge-lgas-to-embrace-financial-autonomy","title":{"rendered":"CSOs Urge LGAs to Embrace Financial Autonomy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Clement Isong Foundation (CIF) and ActionAid Nigeria have harped on the need for public finance strengthening, resource mobilization, and financial probity at the local government councils for inclusive and accountable development at the grassroots.<\/p>\n<p>They made the call in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, during a 2-day Institutional Strengthening and Agenda-Setting Meeting for Local Government Chairmen in the state, under the Strategic Partnership Agreement II (SPA II) project, themed \u201cStrengthening Local Governance for Enhanced Grassroots and Youth Development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a communique\u0301 endorsed by Director, CIF, Elkanah Oluyori, and the Head of Programmes and Policy, ActionAid, Celestine Okwudili, the CSOs said the dialogue was based on the urgent need to align local governance with the renewed financial autonomy of LGAs, citizen expectations, and broader state\/national development priorities.<\/p>\n<p>While calling on council chairmen to look beyond FAAC in their revenue generation drive, which it described as statutory, the communique\u0301 encouraged them to equally look at their potentials for IGR within the state and move for strategic partnership with international donor agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The communique\u0301 said, \u201cLocal government should explore other potentials to get funding by looking inwards and understand what they can produce or offer and seek support from donor agencies. They can achieve this by putting a structure within the local government or a technical team for fundraising and revenue mobilization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe merit-based LGA fundraising teams should pursue grants, PPPs, and donor funding.<\/p>\n<p>Partner with state government to fund health insurance and teacher training programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The communique\u0301 also called on the Presidential Committee on Financial Autonomy for Local Governments to establish clear, actionable timelines and a measurable roadmap to fully implement financial autonomy for all local governments across Nigeria, regretting that some state governments still hold grip of the local government allocations.<\/p>\n<p>On governance and accountability, the communique\u0301 urged councils to adopt inclusive budgeting processes with clear feedback mechanisms for citizens, especially youth and women, even as it encouraged them to publish their budgets and service delivery targets via platforms like MyLGAGovTrack for real-time monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>However, at the event, a Youth Demand Charter was presented to all the 31 local government chairmen with a charge for them to adopt the charter as a framework for prioritizing agriculture, education, and climate action in their LGA agendas.<\/p>\n<p>The communique\u0301 also called for the establishment of Youth Desks in all the 31 Local Government Councils for active youth participation in governance processes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
