{"id":168515,"date":"2025-07-05T21:08:58","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T20:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/natasha-senate-nobodys-property-court-saved-democracy"},"modified":"2025-07-05T22:16:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T21:16:10","slug":"natasha-senate-nobodys-property-court-saved-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/natasha-senate-nobodys-property-court-saved-democracy","title":{"rendered":"Natasha Senate Nobody&#8217;s Property Court Saved Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam has disclosed that the Abuja Federal High Court saved Nigeria\u2019s \u201cshaky\u201d democracy by declaring the suspension of embattled Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Idam said the Senate is not anybody\u2019s property, hence personal vendetta should make way for service to Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate had suspended Natasha for six months following her inability to substantiate her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.<\/p>\n<p>Natasha had challenged her six-month suspension before the Abuja High Court, where Justice Binta Nyako delivered the judgment on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In her judgment, the judge held that the suspension was excessive and deprived the lawmaker\u2019s constituents of their right to representation.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, Idam said the judgement saved Nigeria\u2019s threatened democracy.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement he signed, Idam said: \u201cThe Federal High Court\u2019s Judgment declaring Natasha\u2019s suspension from the 10th Senate as illegal and unlawful has to be framed as the hero of our threatened democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a deus ex machina, the court has intervened to save our shaky democracy. Yet again, the Court has proven that the Judiciary is not just the last hope of the common man but the saviour of our institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow else would Natasha an elected officer have returned to the Senate under this vengeful and dictatorial leadership, if it were not for the judgment?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay be go bended kneels with her husband and perhaps a keg of palm wine to prostrate before Akpabio and beg for her return, even as her name is not Fubara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis judgment has a little to do with Natasha but everything to do with Nigeria\u2019s democracy. It is the end of arbitrary suspension of an elected member of the National Assembly. It is now a defining moment against reckless abuse of power and privileges by either a members of the National Assembly or a presiding officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, this is the courage Fubara clearly lacked and still lacking.
