Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has disagreed with Governor Caleb Mutfwang\u2019s proposal for the creation of state police by the federal government to curb the incessant attacks and killings in the state.<\/p>\n

Mutfwang had made the call over the weekend during the two-day public hearing of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution for the North Central Zone, held in Jos, the state capital.<\/p>\n

While making the proposition, the governor had stated that the solution to the security challenges that has bedevilled the state since 2021 can only be curbed with a state police formation.<\/p>\n

Mutgwang also called on the federal government to empower state governments to establish their police forces, emphasizing that an independent state police would help address the unique security threats faced by states like Plateau.<\/p>\n

He added that the recurring incidents of clashes between herders and farmers in the state which has led to significant loss of lives and property on both sides will be easily curtailed by the state police.<\/p>\n

But while making its submission at the hearing, MACBAN said the creation of a state police cannot be the solution to ending the crisis in the state.<\/p>\n

The group expressed reservations about the proposed creation of state police, warning that state policing could be weaponised by political leaders to marginalize minorities, including Fulani herders.<\/p>\n

In a memorandum submitted by the group under the aegis of the Coalition of Fulani Registered Organisations, Plateau State Chapter, signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Garba Abdullahi Muhammad and Adam Yakubu, the herders body called on the National Assembly and President Bola Tinubu to reject Mutfwang\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n

It called on the federal government to rather focus on strengthening the existing federal police which it said is still preferable to localised policing prone to ethnic and political bias.<\/p>\n

MACBAN added that as a community of herders in the state, they are not in support of the creation of state police because it would expose its communities to discrimination, harassment, and abuse by ethnically biased local police units.<\/p>\n
