{"id":169951,"date":"2025-07-17T17:50:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T16:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/lagos-nimasa-shuts-two-terminals-over-isps-code-violations"},"modified":"2025-07-17T18:57:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T17:57:22","slug":"lagos-nimasa-shuts-two-terminals-over-isps-code-violations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/lagos-nimasa-shuts-two-terminals-over-isps-code-violations","title":{"rendered":"Lagos: NIMASA shuts two terminals over ISPS Code violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has sealed off ShellPlux and TMDK terminals, situated in the Ijegun-Egba area of Lagos, over repeated violations of the International Ship and Port Facility Security, ISPS, Code.<\/p>\n<p>The action, announced on Thursday by NIMASA\u2019s Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, stems from the agency\u2019s responsibility as Nigeria\u2019s designated authority for enforcing the ISPS Code, which was developed under the International Maritime Organisation, IMO, as part of amendments to the SOLAS Convention.<\/p>\n<p>The code is designed to strengthen security protocols for ships and port facilities engaged in international commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Edward stated that the shutdown followed consistent failure by the two terminals to comply with ISPS Code requirements, despite multiple formal warnings issued over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis enforcement action is in line with global maritime security standards and conforms with Section 79(f) of the ISPS Code Implementation Regulations, 2014, which permits the closure of non-compliant facilities that remain in breach for more than three consecutive months,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the enforcement, NIMASA Director General, Dr Dayo Mobereola, noted that the agency resorted to the measure only after exhausting all other options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur intervention is not punitive but necessary to protect Nigeria\u2019s maritime assets.
