{"id":169971,"date":"2025-07-17T17:33:22","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T16:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/icpc-urges-south-east-attorneys-general-to-combat-corruption"},"modified":"2025-07-17T18:59:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T17:59:02","slug":"icpc-urges-south-east-attorneys-general-to-combat-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/icpc-urges-south-east-attorneys-general-to-combat-corruption","title":{"rendered":"ICPC Urges South-East Attorneys General to Combat Corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has urged the South-East Attorneys General to intensify the fight against corruption in the region.<\/p>\n<p>ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Aliyu, made the call during the roundtable engagement with state Attorneys General of the South-East Zone on Thursday in Enugu.<\/p>\n<p>The event had as its theme, \u201cStrengthening Subnational Synergies For Corruption Prevention: Advancing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy in Nigeria\u2019s South-East Region\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Aliyu noted that the synergy between the ICPC and the state Attorneys General was not just desirable, but essential for a robust and effective anti-corruption architecture.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that the engagement was designed to be a dynamic platform for frank discussions, sharing insights, and collaboratively devising approaches that were tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities within each region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the chief law officers of your respective states, you hold a pivotal position in the justice system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour offices are not merely conduits for legal advice, but are vanguards of justice, protectors of public interest, and key partners in fostering good governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognise the immense responsibilities that rest on your shoulders, and we believe that by working together, we can achieve far more than by working in silos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur objective is to forge stronger partnerships, share best practices, and develop a common front against the hydra-headed monster of corruption,\u201d Aliyu said.<\/p>\n<p>The ICPC boss explained that the commission had had productive sessions with other Attorneys General in the South-South and North-Central geopolitical zones, adding that they were keen to replicate that success in the South-East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt provided an invaluable forum for stakeholders to share experiences, articulate challenges, and brainstorm sustainable solutions in our collective anti-corruption efforts,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking, the Enugu State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kingsley Udeh, added that the engagement\u2019s focus was to strengthen partnership between ICPC and the various five south-east states toward ending corruption in the zone.<\/p>\n<p>He further said the event offered him the opportunity to point out the importance of prevention of corruption rather than investigation and prosecution of corrupt individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnugu State has good practices that were institutionalised to prevent corruption which has helped the state to minimise corruption to a large extent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have strengthened our institutions and governance processes to the extent that we do not collect revenue by cash, but using electronic platform, which has boosted our Internally Generated Revenue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, the Ebonyi State Attorney General, Mr Ben Odoh, said the initiative gave them the opportunity to have a Memorandum of Understanding between ICPC and the southeast states through their chief law officers.<\/p>\n<p>He said the partnership would help to step down the initiative of ICPC at the sub-national, which would curb the incessant invitation of top government officials which, he noted, distract them in their businesses and governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if attorneys general are given the opportunities to get petitions and then work with ICPC, those corruption issues will be solved and handled at the state level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it is a very good development and we are ready to go with the idea,\u201d Odoh said<\/p>\n<p>In a goodwill message, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, Sen.
