Fr. Kevin Oselumhense Anetor, Catholic Priest and a Social Advocate among others.

While unanimously condemning the governor for the statement they opined that such utterances were not only unbecoming of a number one political office holder in the state but against the characters of the Edo people.

They also urged the governor to tender an unreserved apology to the former Anambra State governor.

In his statement, Tony Erha said although he is a supporter of Governor Okpebholo, he was not in support of the statement.

“But I won’t support this. He made a reckless and unfortunate statement. It wasn’t good enough coming from a governor, who is supposedly a fatherly figure to all. He should apologize to Edo and Nigerian people for forgiveness”, he said.

The statement titled,”Message to Governor Monday Okpebholo on the threat to Mr Peter Obi”, the Labour party federal lawmaker, Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, described the governor’s utterance as “blatant overreach, an abuse of office, and an infringement on his fundamental rights”.

Omoruyi stated that the former Labour Party presidential candidate as a respected citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and, like every other Nigerian, is constitutionally guaranteed the freedom of movement.

“It was with deep shock and dismay that I came across a trending video featuring the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, wherein he cast aspersions on the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, and the national leader of the Labour Party and Obidient Movement, His Excellency Mr. Peter Gregory Obi.

“First, Your Excellency alleged that Mr. Peter Obi claimed he is a poor man and has “no shishi”, a claim that is false and completely unfounded. Mr. Obi has never described himself as a poor man.

“On the contrary, he has consistently stated that he is a successful businessman and a trader who rose to become the chairman of a bank, and who owns several businesses in Nigeria and abroad.

“What Mr. Obi has maintained that he does not spend money frivolously or use money to buy political loyalty. His refusal to “give shishi” is a principled stand against corrupt political practices, one that clearly seems to be misunderstood or deliberately misrepresented by you.

“Secondly, your declaration that Mr. Obi should not come to Edo State without your permission is a blatant overreach, an abuse of office, and an infringement on his fundamental rights.

“Mr. Peter Obi is a respected citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and, like every other Nigerian, is constitutionally guaranteed the freedom of movement. He is widely known as a peaceful, generous, and law-abiding Nigerian.

“It is important to remind Your Excellency that this same Mr. Obi, just a few weeks ago, donated ₦15 million to St. Philomena School of Nursing in Edo State, a gesture that reflects his commitment to development and humanity. Rather than being vilified, he deserves commendation”, added.

Omoruyi stressed that if there is anyone who should require permission to enter Edo State, it is the criminal elements, killers’ herdsmen, kidnappers, cultists, and others who continue to terrorize the people of the state, and not a respected statesman and national treasure like Mr. Peter Obi.

“I respectfully urge Your Excellency to redirect this misplaced energy toward addressing the numerous challenges facing our dear state, including insecurity, cultism, herdsmen crisis, bad roads, flooding, inadequate healthcare and education infrastructure, drug abuse, youth unemployment, and the growing burden of state debt.

“The time for politics is over. We are now in the era of governance. I encourage you, Your Excellency, to focus on delivering the dividends of democracy to the good people of Edo State and to desist from unnecessary distractions, he added.

Ogbeide Faluyi-Isibor, in the statement, also argued that the governor’s threat is contrary to who the people are.

He contended that Edo people are generally hospitable and very accommodating.

“We are a decent nation congregated by largely educated and exposed people, we do not issue unwarranted threats to friends or even foes.

“Well! Let me start by saying its not who we are. The Edo people are generally hospitable and very accommodating.

“We are a decent nation congregated by largely educated and exposed people. We do not issue unwarranted threats to friends or even foes.

“The last 24 hours have been quite interesting as the entire nation watched the Governor of Edo State make some very uncharitable remarks while he warned the former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi not to visit the state unless his permission is requested as his security will not be guaranteed without his consent and in his words, He should take whatever he gets.

“Well! Let me start by saying that that’s not who we are. The Edo people are generally hospitable and very accommodating. We are a decent nation congregated by largely educated and exposed people, we do not issue unwarranted threats to friends or even foes.

“It is generally agreed that the leader of a community is but a reflection of the people in that community. It is also generally acknowledged that to every rule or assumption, there’s an exception. Please! This is an obvious exception for us in Edo. This Governor appears not to be a true reflection of us in words and in deeds.

“Let’s make it also clear that this was the creation of INEC and not the generality of the Edo people as determined by their votes in a democracy.

“I received several calls and messages bothering on the video that has since gone viral and the first explanation I gave was that Governor Godwin Obaseki was no longer Governor of Edo State and this new “Chair-riff” in town is like “Alice in wonderland, he was obviously over excited and didn’t submit his words to much thoughts.

“As a patriotic Nigerian who believes in equity, fairness, and constitutional order, I feel compelled to respond to a disturbing statement making the rounds in which the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, was seen saying that Mr. Peter Obi must get clearance from him before coming to Edo State, or his security would not be guaranteed.

“Let it be clearly stated that no Nigerian governor has the constitutional power to ban or restrict another citizen from entering any state in the federation.

According to Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled. to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof.

“This is not just law, it is a fundamental right. No governor, regardless of office or party affiliation, has the right to place himself above the Constitution.

“While political sentiments may differ, the Nigerian federation remains one united and indivisible country. State governors are not feudal lords. They do not control immigration, and they cannot create borders within Nigeria. Only a court of law can restrict the movement of any citizen, and even then, it must be based on due legal process.

“The idea that Peter Obi or any citizen would require permission to enter Edo State, or that their safety would be at risk without such permission, is not only unconstitutional, it is deeply dangerous to our democracy.

The governor raised the concern that violence broke out and three” persons were allegedly killed after Peter Obi’s recent visit to Edo State. As sad and condemnable as this incident is, it should never be used as a basis to deny any Nigerian, not even a political opponent. Their constitutional right to move freely.

“The solution to political violence is not intimidation or exclusion, but proper policing, intelligence gathering, and holding perpetrators accountable within the ambit of the law.

“Your Excellency, I have been writing open letters to you long before you were sworn in as governor. In each of them, I have consistently advised you to avoid the political mistakes of your predecessor, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

“Those who clapped and sang Obaseki’s praises when he was acting against the constitution and undermining the rights of citizens are the same people who now vilify him, and are today singing your praises”,he stated.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Nigeria.
