{"id":171626,"date":"2025-07-28T23:33:48","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T22:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/police-investigate-assault-of-okai-akhani-by-vigilantes"},"modified":"2025-07-29T00:37:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T23:37:16","slug":"police-investigate-assault-of-okai-akhani-by-vigilantes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/police-investigate-assault-of-okai-akhani-by-vigilantes","title":{"rendered":"Police Investigate Assault of Okai Akhani by Vigilantes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Edo State Police Command has ordered a thorough investigation into the assault of one Okai Akhani by individuals identified as members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.<\/p>\n<p>Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Command disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Benin City.<\/p>\n<p>Yamu said the Commissioner in charge of the Command, Monday Agbonika who gave the order said the investigation is to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice by the law.<\/p>\n<p>He vowed that the Command would not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations, irrespective of the status of the individuals involved.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, a video clip of the incident, which occurred on Saturday 26th July 2025, has since gone viral, eliciting widespread public concern and condemnation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Edo State Police Command is aware of a disturbing incident involving the alleged brutalisation of Hon. Okai Akhani by individuals identified as members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Command condemns in strong terms any form of unlawful assault, cruel treatment, or abuse of authority by individuals or groups operating under any guise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice by the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Command will not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations, irrespective of the status of the individuals involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we continue to support collaborative efforts in community policing, including the role of vigilante groups in complementing security operations, such roles must be carried out within the ambit of the law and with respect for the rights and dignity of all citizens\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Command, however, urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and to allow the Police to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n<p>He assured that the Police would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.<\/p>\n<p>Okai Akhani was attacked during a town hall meeting organized for legislators in the Edo North senatorial district, both at the state and national assembly, to brief the people on their stewardship at the Auchi council hall.<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered that at the commencement of the programme, individuals identified as members of the vigilante group in the community invaded the premises, shot sporadically to disperse the crowd, and descended on the victim.<\/p>\n<p>It was also learnt that the victim was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in the locality for medical attention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
