Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has spoken of a new trend of smugglers of petrol attacking its officers in Adamawa State.<\/p>\n

The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, an anti-smuggling arm of the NCS, Controller Hussein Ejibunu disclosed the violent turn in smuggling when he addressed newsmen in Yola on Thursday, describing it as a troubling reality.<\/p>\n

Reviewing the activities of the Operation Whirlwind in Adamawa State within the last six weeks, Ejibunu said two attacks were launched on his officers within the period.<\/p>\n

According to him, the first such incident was particularly alarming and it was only by the special grace of God that the smugglers did not succeed in forcing his officers into their operational vehicles and burning them alive.<\/p>\n

Recalling the incident, Ejibunu said the affected officers were ambushed at a community in Mubi North Local Government Area called Mujara.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat began as mere resistance became violent assault and terrifying attack,\u201d he said, adding that the smugglers lashed on his officers with daggers and sticks.<\/p>\n

According to him, one of the officers whom he identified as Isah Mohammed was gravely injured and his phone snatched and smashed on the ground.<\/p>\n

He added that for the second time, a few days after that first attack, his officers were returning from a surveillance duty when suspected smugglers hauled stones at them.<\/p>\n

Ejibunu said however that amidst all the attacks, the Operation Whirlwind officers were able to confiscate a total of 69,375 litres of petrol and diesel packed and prepared for illegal exportation out of Adamawa State.<\/p>\n
