{"id":172678,"date":"2025-08-06T09:14:02","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T08:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/l-pres-warns-of-health-risks-from-unhygienic-abattoirs"},"modified":"2025-08-06T10:21:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T09:21:36","slug":"l-pres-warns-of-health-risks-from-unhygienic-abattoirs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/l-pres-warns-of-health-risks-from-unhygienic-abattoirs","title":{"rendered":"L-PRES Warns of Health Risks from Unhygienic Abattoirs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support, L-PRES, Project has expressed concern over the growing public health risks posed by unhygienic slaughterhouses and inadequate meat inspection practices across Taraba State.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Tuesday in Jalingo during a capacity-building workshop for meat inspectors and abattoir managers, the State Coordinator of the World Bank-supported project, Hananiah Albert, emphasized the urgent need to uphold hygiene standards in the meat processing chain to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety and quality of the meat we consume depend heavily on what happens before, during, and after slaughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why meat inspection must be taken seriously, and abattoirs properly managed in line with national and international best practices to curb diseases such as tuberculosis, anthrax, and brucellosis\u201d, Albert said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that meat inspection and abattoir management were not merely technical tasks but essential pillars of food safety, disease control, and public health protection.<\/p>\n<p>Albert lauded the Taraba State Government\u2019s ongoing livestock reforms and explained that the training was designed to equip participants with standardized hygiene protocols and modern techniques for safer meat handling and processing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis training is a deliberate effort to empower frontline meat inspectors, veterinary officers, and abattoir workers with up-to-date knowledge to ensure uniformity, efficiency, and safety across abattoirs,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Nicholas Namessan, reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to food safety and livestock development.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that meat is one of the most widely consumed animal products in the state and that growing demand comes with added responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our growing population and increasing urbanization, meat consumption is on the rise.
