{"id":172951,"date":"2025-08-08T11:50:57","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T10:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/ex-anti-corruption-chief-supports-new-powers-for-agencies"},"modified":"2025-08-08T13:15:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T12:15:00","slug":"ex-anti-corruption-chief-supports-new-powers-for-agencies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/ex-anti-corruption-chief-supports-new-powers-for-agencies","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Anti-Corruption Chief Supports New Powers for Agencies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Former chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, Okoi Obono-Obla, has welcomed the enactment of the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, describing it as a timely boost for Nigeria\u2019s anti-graft war.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Obono-Obla said the new law equips agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with \u201cthe legal ammunition to tear down the walls of corruption and return stolen wealth to public use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, corruption has strutted through the streets of Nigeria in designer suits and hidden behind high walls,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The former anti-corruption chief recalled his time in office, when he would drive around Abuja and see \u201crows of palatial houses and sprawling estates completed and tastefully finished, yet eerily silent and uninhabited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, many of these properties were \u201cmonuments of corruption,\u201d allegedly \u201cowned by senior civil servants who converted stolen public funds into bricks, marble, and manicured lawns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, there was no Proceeds of Crime Act \u2014 no direct legal tool to seize these assets and return them to public use. Now, that has changed,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Obono-Obla explained that the Act allows for non-conviction-based recovery, meaning courts can order the forfeiture of assets proven to have been corruptly or illegally acquired without securing a criminal conviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this Act, the EFCC and other agencies can seize ill-gotten estates, initiate forfeiture proceedings, and, where appropriate, sell them to make affordable housing available to ordinary Nigerians,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about reclaiming property; it\u2019s about reclaiming dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIt is time to strip corruption of its palaces and put the keys in the hands of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
